Released in the 1970s, the Mitchell Match 440A was a reel way ahead of its time. It was the first to incorporate the finger-dab function, for which this reel became famous. This design feature meant that the bail arm was simply opened by lightly pressing it and releasing it through the cast. This helped it become an essential tool for float.

The early ones (late 60s to mid 70s, 440/Match) were midnight blue without a bale roller, then the 440A added a strengthened stem and bale roller and was the lighter blue metallic colour - these reels circa 1980/81 are the best.

In the 60s the 440 came about which had the fast retrieve of the 410 - 5:1 - plus the auto bale but also the torpedo handle; very rare in the UK. The final step was the Match which had 'Match' on it and the twist handle of the 300 although slightly longer handle than a 300, that was about 1968/9.
